TEKNOR APEX ESTABLISHES AUTOMOTIVE PROGRAM AS A SINGLE SOURCE OF COMPOUNDS FOR A WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS PAWTUCKET, RI, U.S.A., October 31, 2008: Teknor Apex Company has established an automotive industry program capable of serving as a single source for manufacturers that use diverse types of plastics compounds, the company announced today. The program is staffed by specialists in automotive applications for thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), engineering thermoplastics (ETPs), and flexible vinyl, according to industry manager Steve McCormack. “Separately the Vinyl, TPE, and ETP Divisions have amassed years of experience in serving the automotive industry, including many OEM approvals and a wide array of applications,” said McCormack. “What’s new is that for the first time we have a single team in place ready to supply the full range of Teknor Apex automotive compounds to the entire world marketplace.” McCormack cited the special capabilities of the three product divisions: ● Engineering Thermoplastics. This division operated as Chem Polymer when Teknor Apex acquired the business in 2004. Automotive has traditionally been its largest market. The company’s wide range of Beetle® and Chemlon® glass-reinforced, mineral-filled, impact-modified, and flame retardant nylon compounds are used in under-hood, under-chassis, exterior, and interior components. ● Vinyl. Apex® compounds are mainstays in instrument panel skins; interior trim; seals and gaskets; window encapsulations; over-molded levers, knobs, and grips; scuff plates; body side moldings; and SAE wire jacketing. The high-performance Flexalloy® vinyl elastomer product range includes grades that provide resistance to grease, oil, and aggressive fluids in demanding automotive applications. ● Thermoplastic Elastomer. Commercial applications of Teknor Apex TPEs include ducts, hoses, knobs, strut covers, airbag covers, grips, gaskets, seals, wheel well liners, instrument panel skins, and interior and exterior trim. There are six distinct TPE families: Uniprene® thermoplastic vulcanizates; Telcar® TPOs; Monprene®, Tekron®, Elexar® styrenic TPEs, and Tekbond® bondable compounds for over-molding onto rigid thermoplastic substrates.
